Two days after the Colombian army rescued the 15 kidnapped by the FARC (the Revolutionary Army Forces of Colombia) leftist guerrilla, I went for a walk in downtown Medellin, the city where I was born.

A women with ragged shirt, no shoes, dirty and her hair all messed approached me.

Believe everything and you'll be right half the time

Friday night was quite the letdown.

I met up with some high-school friends from Alabama at an all-night diner. I'd hardly seen any of them in the last few years, but now they're all finishing engineering degrees.

For the most part I'm happy for them, but I found myself shocked by some of their politics.

FBI should not use racial profiling

Daily Egyptian, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL

If the Bush Justice Department gets its way, the FBI may soon be going after American citizens on the basis of our race, religion and ethnicity-even when there is no evidence of wrongdoing. Federal law enforcement officials recently revealed proposed changes to the so-called attorney general guidelines that would allow authorities to initiate investigations of suspects by matching their personal traits to a terrorist profile.

Our View Situation: By state mandate, Eastern must reduce 40% of our waste-stream, but we are currently at 33%. Stance: As a whole, we can get to 40% reduction easily with just a little bit of cooperation and action, but we shouldn't stop there. Eastern students ought to do a much better job recycling.

Drilling for answers won't provide solution

Earlier this week President Bush lifted the executive ban on offshore drilling, a ban put on by his father back in 1990. The move came as a way for the president to bring the issue to the forefront and pressure the House and Senate into making a decision.

You have to applaud our president: he's not just sitting on his hands and being a lame duck.

Theme parks can only do so much

Several weeks ago, a 17-year-old boy was struck by a roller coaster and killed at the Six Flags theme park in Atlanta. The teenager scaled two 6-foot high fences in a restricted area and passed several warning signs while trying to retrieve a hat he had lost on the Batman ride.

Drinking more important than taking care of children

There are people in this world that should never be allowed to procreate.

A shining example are Marleny Martinez-Amaya and Enrique Ramirez, who decided that their five-month-old infant would be perfectly capable of looking after himself in a locked car while they got drunk at a local bar for three hours, according to a story by the Associated Press.

Two piles of crap don't make a right

I'm an equal-opportunity hater in this forum, meaning that both presidential candidates look about as appetizing to me as muddy gum on the sidewalk.

I don't really have an opinion leaning towards any one political spectrum, so in lieu of that, I have chosen to hate on both candidates fairly and equally.
